The rules were written by the people who didn't come back

Cave diving's safety record improved enormously once the fatalities were studied rather than mourned. Nearly every death examined came back to the same short list of omissions.

This page is an overview, not a course

Reading it will not prepare you to enter a cave. Cave certification is taught progressively — cavern, intro, apprentice, full cave — because the skills take repetition in the water to become reliable under stress. Find an instructor before you find a cave.

Accident analysis

The accepted foundations

Every cave training agency teaches some version of these. The wording differs; the substance does not.

  1. Be trained for the dive you are doing Open-water certification does not transfer to an overhead. Depth, penetration, stage bottles, scooters and sidemount each carry their own training progression — dive the one you actually hold.
  2. Maintain a continuous guideline to open water A reel run from the surface, unbroken, that you can follow out with your eyes shut — because in a silt-out you will be doing exactly that. Gaps and jumps get marked and connected, never assumed.
  3. Reserve two thirds of your gas for the exit Turn the dive at one third of your starting supply. The remaining two thirds cover the exit plus a team member who has lost their own — which is the entire point of the margin.
  4. Respect depth, and plan the gas for it Narcosis degrades judgement precisely where judgement matters, and oxygen becomes a hazard rather than a resource. Deeper dives require appropriate mixes and the training to use them.
  5. Carry three independent lights A primary and two backups, each capable of getting you out on its own. Light failure in an overhead is not an inconvenience; it is the emergency the other rules assume.
  6. Dive the plan, and turn it when anyone says so Any team member may end the dive at any time, for any reason, without debate or explanation. Nobody has ever died from turning a dive too early.

Where to get trained

The agencies below all run recognised cave programmes. The original site's Houston-area instructor listings are preserved in the archive, but they date from the early 2000s — verify anyone's current credentials directly with the agency.

NSS-CDS

The Cave Diving Section of the National Speleological Society. Long-standing cavern through full cave progression, and the body behind much of the early accident analysis.

NACD

National Association for Cave Diving. A 501(c)(3) non-profit founded in 1968 to improve cave diving safety through training and education. Cavern, intro, apprentice and full cave, with a strong presence across the Florida springs.

GUE

Global Underwater Explorers. Standardised team equipment configuration and procedures, with an exploration and conservation focus.

TDI

Technical Diving International. Broad technical curriculum including cavern and cave, widely available through local dive centres.

IANTD

International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers. Cave, trimix and rebreather training with a long history in the Gulf region.

Local instruction

Texas cave training has historically run through Houston and the Hill Country. Ask any agency above for currently active instructors near you.

Why the warning signs exist

The Grim Reaper sign

Many cave entrances in Florida and Texas carry a warning placard — often the well-known Grim Reaper sign — placed at the point where daylight still reaches but the overhead begins. The message is deliberately blunt: Stop. Prevent your death. Go no farther.

It is aimed squarely at certified open-water divers, because that is who the accident statistics kept identifying: competent, confident divers with no overhead training who swam a little farther than they meant to, lost the light, and could not find the way back.

If you take nothing else

The overhead is the whole problem

Every difference between open water and cave diving follows from a single fact: you cannot ascend. A free-flowing regulator, a flooded mask, a failed light — each is a manageable annoyance on a reef and a serious problem several hundred metres back in a cave system.

Training does not make the cave safer. It makes you capable of solving problems without the surface.
